Zion Gate is the one through which you need to exit Jerusalem to visit the
Holocaust Museum and
the
grave of Schindler. Located near the southwestern tip of Old
Jerusalem, the Zion Gate leads into the Armenian and the Jewish neighborhood
of the old city.
The pockmarks that adorn the Zion Gat
e are from the 1948 war between the
Jewish and Arab armies. They are from the bullets that
missed their targets, so you can imagine how many more bullets were fired through the
gat
e during the battle for the city.
Travel Tip
To the north (just follow the wall) of the Zio
n Gat
e is the Jaffa Gat
e, from which the
bustling Jaffa Road stretches westward into the modern New Jerus
alem.
If you get tired of all of the
history in
Old Jerusalem and yearn for a time warp back into the 21st
century, exit Jaffa Ga
te, walk along Jaffa Road for about a quarter of a
mile, and then turn left down the hill, where you will find modern cafes, restaurants, stores and other amenities.
