Here is the grave of Oscar Schindler. Steven Spielberg lionized
Oscar Schindler in "Schindler
's List". After the war, Oscar moved to Argentina with his wife
and tried his hand at farming. Having failed, he
returned to Germany on his own and lived out his life in poverty punctuated
by annual
trips to Israel, where he was treated like royalty.
In the last scene of Schindler's List, the Jews place stones on
his grave to mark the shape of a cross. I was surprised to find stones
still covering
Oskar Schindler's
grave in that shape, although I suspected they
were stones placed by more recent visitors.
Travel Tip
The grav
e isn't at the Lutheran church near the
Holy Sepulcher
Church as some claim, and is tricky to find. To get to it, walk about 300 yards downhill from the
Zion Gate until you come to a
small parking lot, across the road from which are two unmarked gates. Walk
through the right gate and into the cemetery, and then down two levels to find it
near the center of the third (the lowest) level. The stones on top may help you find it.
